JACOB MILLER and
HIS DESCENDANTS
from Pennsylvania to Nebraska
These pages are dedicated to the memory of all the descendants of Jacob
Miller
that I knew and loved. My mother's brothers and sisters and their families
lived
in the vicinity of Shelby, Polk Co, Nebraska during the years I was growing
up.
The family gatherings were numerous and often,--- highlighted by bountiful
tables
and the love and laughter of children and grownups alike.
Pennsylvania 1750 - 1850
Illinois 1850 - 1880
Nebraska 1880 ------- - - -
The little girl asked, "Mama, where did our family
come from? All the kids at school say their families came from Germany.
Did our family come from Germany?"
"Oh, no," Mama quickly answered, "Our family has been in
America a long time and the first ones did not come from Germany -- They
came from Holland, they were Pennsylvania-Dutch."
Little did Mama know that the "Dutch" part was actually "Deutsch" and the family did indeed come from Germany. The difference between the children at school and our family was about 150 years of Americanization. Most of the heads of families in our rural area had come to America in the 1890's while our ancestor and his brothers arrived in Philadelphia on Sept 16, 1753.
